About Therapy

drfitwood and flowers about therapy mara fraser

Therapy is a place where you can talk openly, honestly, and without judgment. It’s not about something being “wrong” with you. It’s about giving yourself the time and space to understand what’s going on inside, learn new ways to handle challenges, and feel more like yourself again.

In therapy, you can:

  • Make sense of your thoughts and feelings

  • Find better ways to cope with stress and anxiety

  • Heal from past experiences

  • Improve your relationships

  • Build confidence and self-compassion

  • Work towards solutions for challenging situations

You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Talking to someone who’s there to truly listen can make all the difference. Reaching out is a strong, brave step toward feeling better, and you deserve that.

FAQ’s

  • Starting counselling can feel quite scary. I aim to keep things relaxed and we work at a pace you feel comfortable with. These are your sessions; you set the agenda.

  • Each session is 50 minutes long. Counselling is tiring for both client and therapist. This amount of time is perfect for keeping focused and means you get my best attention every time.

  • Therapy works best when it takes place weekly. There is, of course, the option to reduce sessions if you feel you are ready.

The number of sessions depends on your individual needs. We will review progress together every 6 weeks to make sure all is going well.

  • Yes. Your sessions are confidential. There are some legal reasons why I may need to break confidentiality, but these will be discussed with you at our first session. I may sometimes discuss individual cases with my supervisor. These discussions are anonymised and counselling supervisors are bound by the same rules of confidentiality. Supervision is vital in counselling to ensure clients are always receiving a high standard of service.

  • Yes. I can offer online sessions if you need them. I use an online platform called Doxy.me, which provides a confidential virtual space for therapy to take place. We can also arrange to go online if you are unable to attend in person for some reason.

  • I ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice of cancellation. Cancellations of less than 24 hours will, in most circumstances, mean that the session must still be paid for.

  • Both are talking therapies. Counselling focuses on specific, current issues and often looks at providing both support and coping strategies. It tends to be shorter in duration.
Psychotherapy goes deeper and looks at more complex factors. In particular, how experiences in the past continue to shape the client’s present. Due to these factors, psychotherapy usually continues for longer.

I am a qualified counsellor with a deep passion for supporting people through life’s challenges.

My journey into counselling began many years ago. I started working with people with learning disabilities. After this, I trained as a registered nurse, providing physical and emotional care and support to people experiencing physical health issues. These experiences have shaped me; they have helped me to develop compassion, patience and to fully understand the importance of treating every person as the unique individual they are.

I began to recognise the importance of mental well-being to the overall experience of life, and its vital role in feeling healthy and happy. At this point, I decided to leave nursing and retrain.

My first step was to obtain a first-class honours degree (BSc) in Psychology. Then followed a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I believe that learning is a life-long activity, so I am always learning and striving for a deeper understanding of issues that impact people in their day-to-day lives. I use these qualifications, alongside my real-world lived experience, to offer a safe, empathic and non-judgmental space where you can explore the challenges you are facing.

I believe that with the right support, everyone has the capacity to grow, heal, and thrive. Whether you’re facing anxiety, low mood, life transitions, or simply feel stuck, I’m here to walk alongside you—at your pace, in your own way.
